Swords and Swordsmen chronicles the major developments in the sword’s design, manufacturing processes and methods of use from Ancient Egypt to the American Civil War. In this book, Mike Loades takes the history of the sword and wields it to tell enthralling stories, populated with ferocious and fascinating characters. Along the way he traces the history of the sword in war and the history of the private duel.
The main focus for each of the main chapters is a sword that exists in a present day collection and which belonged to a known historical character. Each sword is therefore seen in the social and military context of its time and becomes a prism through which to see a little of the life of the man who once held it. From Tutankhamun to General Custer, and including a chapter on the legendary samurai Uesugi Kenshin, this book charts the lives of warriors from many ages and cultures; men whose lives depended on their skill with the sword. Other historical figures whose swords are featured include: King Raedwald, Henry V of England, Maximilian, Henri IV of France, Oliver Cromwell and George Washington.
Lavishly illustrated with over 200 photographs of the finest swords surviving in the world, Swords and Swordsmen celebrates these weapons as iconic art objects, whilst at the same time examining both their magical symbolism and the horror and practicality of their use. Adam Des Forges has contributed exquisite line drawings, derived from old fight manuals, which bring to life the energy and the beauty of the European martial arts. The author, who has spent a lifetime as an historical fight expert, recounts many of the experiments he has undertaken and the adventures he has experienced, sword in hand.
