Mike Loades - Writer / Author

Mike’s first major work, Swords and Swordsmen, is to be published by Pen and Sword Books in October 2010. This lavishly illustrated book chronicles the history of the sword, its methods of manufacture and use and the lives of the men who lived and died by it. Spanning from Ancient Egypt to the American Civil War, this in-depth study is a must for anyone with an interest in swords or military history.

In 2008 Mike wrote the introduction and chapters on weapons and armour for The Worldwide History of Warfare, which he also edited for Thames and Hudson.

History of WarfareOther factual prose writing includes several articles on Arms and Armour published in magazines and journals and text about The Houses of York and Lancaster for a Royal Mail commemorative stamp issue pack.

Available online is an article about experiments with a medieval kite bomb published in the Hilary 2009 issue of the Christ Church, Oxford Library Newsletter.

He has also written of his experiences leading an experimental archaeology team to build an Iron Age British Chariot. An abridged version was commissioned in 2001 by the BBC for their website and full version is available online here.

In addition to his published work, Mike is constantly writing for television, whether it is scripts for his TV series or whether he is working up ideas and outlines as a TV programme developer. He also wrote the scripts for the videos “The Blow By Blow Guide To Swordfighting” and “Archery – Its History and Forms”.

He is currently writing a book on Horse Archery and developing a number of other projects.
