The book is a major 500 page work with 215 photographs, many previously unpublished and more than 100 suberb line drawings by Adam Des Forges. It chronicles the history of the sword and its use from Ancient Egypt to the American Civil War.

Each of the main chapters focuses on a sword that is still in existence and which has strong associations with a known historical figure. Each sword is therefore seen in the social and military context of its time.

This classic film on the history of archery was first released in 1995 and has only previously been available on VHS.
